Carol Lloyd Speech

BOOBALICIOUS CALENDAR LAUNCH, Souths Leagues Club, West End.

International Lesbians Day - 4th Sept. 2009

carol.jpgGood afternoon everyone, I’m Carol Lloyd, Patron of the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities,..  and its my pleasure to welcome you all to the International Lesbian Day Expo 2009.  May I first acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we meet today..

It’s great to see so many gay women here with their families and friends, supporting our community on this very special day for lesbians.
Our thanks go to CityLickers for organising this important event—and particularly for their generosity in donating today’s profits  to the QAHC Lesbian Health Action Group.
……Let’s have a round of applause for CityLickers

You know, things certainly have changed since I came home from London in 1969 and hit the scene…..at that time, there was only one gay bar in Brisbane …and it was mixed.   It was in Spring Hill, upstairs at the Alliance, run by the fabulous Miss Toy de Wile – a mere slip of a girl at the time.

It was where all the women on the scene congregated several nights a week – and Sunday afternoons….all eight of us.
It really was like one big happy family…and I think Toy was Mum.

As you’d imagine, things became a little incentuous and pickin’s were pretty slim –but most of us remain close and in contact today. Of course,  we were all  bullet-proof then, being in our early 20’s so health issues were never even on our radar.

The worst we ever dealt with was deadly hangovers, mortal dehydration, and a touch of malnutrition since the bottle of scotch and the thrill of the chase beat a supermarket visit hands down….

My personal concession to food was a tin of Irish Stew that I intook religiously every Sunday.

But I digress:
For those that don’t know, the Lesbian Health Action Group is an unfunded volunteer group of hard-working and dedicated women,  who give up their personal time and energy to promote lesbian health in Queensland.

Where are they?  Step forward girls, and take a bow….let’s give them a hand, ladies and gentlemen.

Thank you for all your fine efforts.   And thanks also in advance, to all the brave and caring souls who bared their beautiful breasts - big or small, we love them all -- in support of their sisters.

You’ve done yourselves and all of us proud, and we thank you.

Now you may have seen the girls in their purple shirts at community events over the past year promoting lesbian health issues, with a recent focus on breast awareness --- which brings me to our very alluring subject matter today.

This is my first duty as the Patron of QAHC, and I can’t think of anyone with a greater appreciation of the female form than myself…I’ve spent many years, studying this subject very closely…. so when I was given the opportunity by the Lesbian Health Action group to officially launch the 2010 Boobalicious Breast Awareness Calendar  -  well, I immediately grabbed it with both hands…

(HOLD UP CALENDAR)

Before you get too immersed in all the goodies on offer today, folks -  I’d really love you to visit the girls at their stall and purchase one of these collectables for yourself and one for each of the women you love in your life.

As we all know, $10 won’t get you far these days, but $10 on one of these fabulous Boodalicious Breast Awareness Calendars, will go a long way towards helping the cause, and supporting the great on-going work by the  Lesbian Health Action Group.

And that work never stops.

A survey conducted at this same event last year revealed that  there are a number of health issues that  many of us in the lesbian community regard as important, and breast health is just one of them.

Other health issues that could benefit from greater focus, and as a result, see us all lead healthier and happier lives are:
•    Keeping active
•    Parenting
•    Relationships
•    Sexual health

So - The Boobalicious Calendar is a direct result of the research you participated in last year, so thanks for your valued input.

Now don’t miss this opportunity to have your say by completing this year’s survey at the Lesbian Health Action Group stall when you call by for your Calendar!

Ahhhhhhh   …Breasts…boobs…norks…tits...good bits…the twins…the girls….twin sets….whatever your preference:
They are what defines us…they are very precious and very beautiful things to be admired, loved and protected.   So please…buy at least two Booobalicous Breast Awareness Calendars…one for each of them, …and take good care of your girls!

In closing…, On behalf of QAHC, a big thank you to CityLickers,  to all of our participating  stall holders, and to all of you for joining in today’s celebration of the beauty of breasts…

It is now my very pleasant duty to officially launch the Boobalicious calendar  -- may it give you hours of enjoyment..
Thank you for your time and good humour…and thank you for supporting the cause.  Enjoy the rest of the day…

New Queensland study looks at older lesbian and gay people’s care networks

A new study, funded by the University of Queensland, is looking at the ways paid and unpaid carers come together to provide support to older lesbian and gay people.

This reflects the growing awareness across Australia of the issues confronting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people as they grow older. A broad coalition of support – including LGBT seniors, LGBT community organisations, aged care providers, and university researchers – is emerging to challenge existing practices and promote social inclusion for all older people.

A key issue is the general invisibility of LGBT people in the health and aged care systems. If service providers assume older people are heterosexual (or asexual) or that gender identity is simply biological, then the particular experiences and needs of LGBT people will be ignored.

For many LGBT people, a lifetime of discrimination (remembering that sodomy was decriminalised in Queensland only in 1989) means that they expect to be discriminated against when accessing services and supports in later life. A study by the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC) in 2008 identified that 65% of the LGBT people surveyed were concerned that their sexuality or gender identity would affect the quality of aged care or carers’ services provided to them. Thus, a major concern is that this expectation of discrimination leads to a failure to access needed services or to hiding one’s sexual or gender identity when in contact with these services.

While much of the discussion in the LGBT community has focused on the provision of LGBT-specific residential and retirement homes, the reality is that for most older LGBT people – as with other older Queenslanders – care will be delivered through networks of community-based providers, including unpaid carers. However, care-giving is typically understood as a family activity undertaken by opposite-sex partners and adult children. There is relatively little understanding of non-traditional care-giving relationships and dynamics, such as the care provided by friends and how friends move from social support to caring roles. In the QAHC survey, LGBT people reported that they expected to gain emotional, physical and financial support from a wide range of parties, including same-sex partners, LGBT friends, heterosexual friends, community agencies and, to a lesser degree, siblings, extended family members and adult children.

The new Queensland study, led by Mark Hughes and Sue Kentlyn, is looking at the diversity of the care networks of lesbian and gay people aged 60 and over, and how care providers respond to this person’s sexual identity. The research involves interviews with the older lesbian or gay person, as well as their paid and unpaid carers.

For information about the project please contact Dr Mark Hughes (Email: m.hughes5@uq.edu.au or Phone: 0405 386 976) or Ms Sue Kentlyn (Email: dryad@internode.on.net or Phone: 07 3379 7273).

The project has been approved by the University of Queensland Ethics Committee.

Naked Spirituality – A Soul’s Quest.

By day, a teacher, by night, an explorer – C.C. Saint-Clair began to search for life’s meaning, initially through writing fiction and more recently through learning, living, and writing about spiritual philosophy.

A couple of years after her most recent set of back-to-back novels, “Far From Maddy” and “Morgan in the Mirror”, her writing took an entirely different tack. C.C. embarked on “Late But *IN* Time”, a collection of spiritual articles inspired by my inner-most thoughts on all Matters of the Soul.

This series that comprises, for now, twelve articles complete with illustrations deals with what I consider uncompromising, hardcore spirituality and is an ongoing *live* project. My most recent creative endeavour has lead C.C. to create podcasts – eighteen of them. These five to ten minute readings are cast against a backdrop of stills selected from hundreds of images set aside for this project. Together and separately, these articles and the podcasts amount to a free guide to what she has recently decided to call Naked Spirituality, the only approach to spirituality that, she believes, if practised with an open heart and diligently, can truly set us on The Path of spiritual evolution. ‘Awakening’ and the series Late But *IN* Time are available as free PDF downloads on www.ccsaint-clair.com/destiny.

The podcasts have just been uploaded to Youtube. http://www.ccsaint-clair.com/faithinsoul/podcasts.

LesBeDancin.jpgLes B Dancin' - 2 NIGHTS!!!

Hi everyone,

Great news...it is confirmed, we will be dancing 2 nights a week, yay!!! I am so excited that we have received enough support from all you guys to make this possible.

Starting from this week the classes will run on both Monday & Wednesday nights @ St Pauls, Spring Hill from 7 - 8.30pm. St Pauls have been such a wonderful help to us to let us have the venue 2 nights a week, so if anyone is keen for a drink or feed before or after class head on in! I did try to organise a hall or bigger venue, but due to other things being on & cost of some places this was the best option. Also it keeps everything together & with the two nights we should have more room. Mark (the manager) has also mentioned as the support has been so great we might organise some loyalty drink vouchers & meal vouchers, so stay tuned for that.

Another huge thank you to Monique for all her help with getting this organised as well, it is greatly appreciated & I can't wait to see some of our dancers on the dance floor at scarlet. Maybe at this next one in our horror themed outfits   If anyone hasn't had a look at the pics from our launch class or the scarlet performance they are on citylicker.com.au.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone, looking forward to seeing you either tonight, Wednesday night or for that matter - BOTH! I hope everyone has a great week!

Trina :o)
